The tree of life in the Garden of Eden.? Part 4
The interpretation of the "tree of life, which is in the midst of the garden" must be illuminated by:
Genesis 3:22.
After sin, God says, "If a man is already as one of us, versed in good and evil, let him now lay not forth his hand and reap also of the tree of life, and eat and live forever." Therefore the tree of life gives eternal life.
God drove the couple out of the Garden of Eden, because, there, there existed the tree of eternal life. Since they had already sinned and died spiritually, that is, unable to live in communion with God, then they could no longer eat the fruit of that tree, or else they would live eternally, thinking to be like God. And that would leave them outside the divine plan of restoration, far from the presence of God, without salvation, which would come through Jesus.
The details about this tree are very scarce in the biblical text. It refers only to its central location in the Garden of Eden and that the first human couple was prevented from reaching this tree after they had disobeyed the divine commandment. They were thus expelled from this garden or original paradise. As a way to prevent both Adam and Eve and probably their descendants from returning to the Garden, and consequently to take the fruits of the Tree of Life.
The Bible says that God placed superhuman creatures, called cherubim, who possessed a continually revolving sword of fire.
According to the biblical account, this tree had already been placed in the garden before the creation of the first man, Adam. Many commentators claim that this tree would not have inherently vitalizing qualities in its fruits, but would be a symbol of the guarantee of eternal life on the part of God to those whom He allowed to eat of its fruit. Since God placed this tree there, it is believed that the goal would be to allow Adam to eat of his fruit, perhaps after his faithfulness has been proved to the point God judges to be satisfactory and sufficient. When Adam disobeyed, he was cut off from eating that tree, stopping him and his offspring from gaining eternal life.
Another point of view points to the fact that God already allowed Adam and Eve to eat of the fruit of the tree of life, for it was said:
"And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Out of the tree of the garden thou shalt eat freely" (Gen 2:16)
With the exception of UMA, that of the knowledge of good and evil. This implies that they could already eat the fruit of the tree of life without waiting for further authorization. Accepting this reasoning, it was the literal fruit of the tree that guaranteed eternal life.
God bless us with our faith in Jesus.
